Shedding their previous moniker, Southern Death Cult, the band's debut full-length intertwines gothic rock tropes with Indigenous American imagery and mystical themes. Ian Astbury's powerful vocals are framed by Billy Duffy's soaring, phase-heavy guitar work, moving away from pure post-punk toward a more expansive, hard rock direction. The album laid the thematic and sonic foundation for their massive stadium success later in the decade.
