The Gilded Palace of Sin cover art

'The Gilded Palace of Sin' pioneers a sound Gram Parsons dubbed "Cosmic American Music" by fusing traditional country and folk with the emotional depth of soul and flourishes of psychedelic rock. The songwriting partnership between Parsons and Chris Hillman juxtaposes laments on contemporary social decay with soulful R&B covers, all defined by their close vocal harmonies and the revolutionary, effects-laden pedal steel guitar of "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow. Although a commercial failure upon release, the album was a landmark successor to The Byrds' 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' and became a foundational text for the country-rock and Americana movements.
