Album Notes & Community Reviews

Formed by Michael Mantler and Carla Bley as an extension of the Jazz Composers Guild, this ensemble attempted to bring the chaotic, structural liberation of free jazz into a massive big band format. 'Communication' features an enormous, fluctuating cast of avant-garde luminaries, including Roswell Rudd and Steve Lacy, engaging in dense, highly dissonant collective improvisation. It is a towering, ambitious milestone in experimental large-ensemble jazz.
