Album Notes & Community Reviews

Dispensing entirely with a traditional rhythm section, 'Steppin'' features the phenomenal interplay of four elite avant-garde horn players. David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett weave intricate, polyphonic post-bop structures and fierce free improvisations. The recording solidified the quartet as a revolutionary force in late-twentieth-century jazz.
