- Born: February 19, 1955 in Oakland, California, United States
Biography
American tenor saxophonist from Oakland, a founding member of the *World Saxophone Quartet* and one of the most recorded jazz artists alive. Murray's playing fuses free-jazz intensity with the swing-era tenor tradition, powered by circular breathing and a cavernous tone. As a leader since 'Flowers for Albert' (1976) for #India Navigation# he has moved between octet, big band, quartet and countless collaborations without exhausting his invention.
