Biography
Julius Hemphill (1938-1995) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer from Fort Worth, Texas. A central figure of the St. Louis Black Artists' Group and the New York loft jazz scene, he recorded the landmarks 'Dogon A.D.' (1972) and 'Coon Bid'ness' (1975) before co-founding the *World Saxophone Quartet* in 1976 with *Oliver Lake*, *David Murray* and *Hamiet Bluiett*. His writing, rooted in blues and rhythm and blues but harmonically fearless, also fed his saxophone sextet and big band projects of the 1980s and 1990s.
