The first and only studio album featuring Swiss keyboardist Patrick Moraz, 'Relayer' marked a significant stylistic departure, incorporating aggressive elements of jazz fusion and avant-garde soundscapes into the band's progressive rock framework. Dominated by the 22-minute, battle-themed epic "The Gates of Delirium," the album showcases a harsher, more improvisational direction characterized by Steve Howe's sharp Telecaster tones and Moraz's dynamic, complex keyboard textures. The album's structure, with one side-long piece and two tracks on the reverse, highlights a frantic, rhythmically intricate approach on "Sound Chaser" and concludes with the melodic, pastoral feel of "To Be Over," solidifying the record as one of the band's most musically adventurous works.
