Afrika Bambaataa

Known as the "Godfather of Hip-Hop," Afrika Bambaataa was a pioneering American DJ, producer, and community leader from the South Bronx. He was a central figure in the development of hip-hop culture, transforming the Black Spades street gang into the pro-social Universal Zulu Nation. His innovative use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine and eclectic musical taste, blending funk with the electronic sounds of groups like *Kraftwerk*, culminated in the seminal 1982 electro-funk track 'Planet Rock'. Released on #Tommy Boy# Records with the Soulsonic Force, the song defined a new genre and solidified his status as a foundational architect of electronic music and hip-hop.
