Biography
Associates were a Scottish post-punk and pop band formed in Dundee in 1979, built around singer Billy MacKenzie and instrumentalist Alan Rankine. Their albums 'The Affectionate Punch' and 'Sulk' mixed dramatic torch singing with clipped guitars and synthesisers, and 'Party Fears Two' and 'Club Country' were major UK hits in 1982. After Rankine left, MacKenzie kept the name alive with other musicians until 1990, including the album 'Perhaps'. His death in 1997 closed the story of one of British pop's most distinctive voices.
