Steve Reid

A drummer and bandleader who was a key figure in the 1970s 'loft jazz' scene. Reid was known for his explosive, polyrhythmic style and his independent, Afro-centric artistic vision. He self-released a series of raw and powerful spiritual free jazz albums on his own Mustevic Sound label, which have since become highly sought-after cult classics. He later gained a new audience through his collaborations with electronic musician Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), bridging the gap between the free jazz tradition and a new generation of listeners.
