Biography
The Bar-Kays are a Memphis soul and funk band formed as a #Stax# session group. Their 1967 instrumental hit Soul Finger made them *Otis Redding*'s backing band, but that December four members died with Redding in a plane crash, leaving trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander to rebuild the group. The re-formed band backed *Isaac Hayes*, recorded 'Gotta Groove' and 'Black Rock', and, fronted by Larry Dodson, became a successful funk act on #Mercury# through the 1970s and 1980s.
