Beth Gibbons

Biography

English singer from Exeter, the voice of *Portishead*, whose 'Dummy' (1994) made her one of the defining vocalists of trip-hop. Her work outside the band includes 'Out of Season' (2002) with *Rustin Man* and the solo album 'Lives Outgrown' (2024) on #Domino Recording Company#. Born in Exeter and raised in Devon, she moved to Bristol in her twenties, where the sessions that became Portishead began. Her voice, fragile and accusatory at once, remains one of the most imitated in modern music, and her rare releases outside the band are treated as events.
