Formed in Bristol, England, in 1991, Portishead established a distinct and influential space in electronic music. The group fused hip-hop production aesthetics—such as sampled breakbeats and turntablism—with live instrumentation and the melancholic, emotive vocals of singer Beth Gibbons. Their approach integrated textures from spy film soundtracks, jazz, and dub, creating dark, cinematic soundscapes that became a cornerstone of the trip-hop genre.
