Biography

Bill Withers was an American singer-songwriter whose plainspoken warmth and folk-soul sensibilities produced some of the most enduring songs of the 1970s. After serving in the U.S. Navy and working in factories, he launched his music career at age 32 with the #Sussex Records# debut 'Just as I Am', which featured the Grammy-winning hit "Ain't No Sunshine". His follow-up, 'Still Bill', contained the universal anthem "Lean on Me" and the funk-driven "Use Me". Known for his rich baritone and relatable lyrics, Withers' brief but impactful career also included the timeless hit "Lovely Day" and a collaboration with *Grover Washington Jr.*, "Just the Two of Us", before he retired from the music industry in 1985.
