Biography
Charles Gayle was an American free jazz musician from Buffalo, New York, born on 28 February 1939 and based in New York City. After about twenty years of homelessness spent busking in streets and subways, he emerged in 1988 with albums for #Silkheart# and became a leading figure in free jazz, known for torrential, spiritually charged tenor saxophone and for later solo piano records that answered critics of his technique. He recorded with *William Parker*, *Rashied Ali* and *Cecil Taylor*, among many others, and died in Brooklyn on 7 September 2023.
