Biography

Rashied Ali was a revolutionary American drummer and a leading exponent of free jazz, best known as *John Coltrane*'s final drummer. His polyrhythmic, multi-directional style liberated the drums from traditional timekeeping, creating a conversational flow of sound. This is exemplified on the landmark duo album with Coltrane, 'Interstellar Space', a pure expression of the free improvisation movement. Ali's work on late-period Coltrane albums like 'Meditations' and 'The Olatunji Concert' marked a definitive shift into the avant-garde. After Coltrane's death, Ali became a bandleader, founded the influential loft club Ali's Alley, and started his own label, #Survival Records#, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure who profoundly influenced generations of musicians.
