Biography

Christian Marclay, born in San Rafael, California in 1955 and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, is a visual artist and composer credited as an unwitting inventor of turntablism. Beginning in 1979 he treated records and turntables as instruments, slicing and reassembling vinyl to build sound collages independently of hip hop practice. Long associated with New York improvisers such as *John Zorn* and the *Kronos Quartet*, he works across performance, sculpture, photography and film. His 'Video Quartet' and the 24-hour 'The Clock', winner of the Golden Lion at Venice in 2011, made him a leading figure in sound art.
