Gary Bartz

An alto and soprano saxophonist known for his fiery, soulful playing and his role in bridging post-bop with funk and spiritual jazz. After cutting his teeth with Art Blakey and Max Roach, Bartz joined Miles Davis's electric band during the 'Live-Evil' era. He is best known for leading his own group, Gary Bartz Ntu Troop, which produced a series of landmark albums in the early 1970s that blended adventurous improvisation with a powerful, politically conscious, and Afro-centric message.
