Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt

Biography

A pairing entry for tenor saxophonists Gene Ammons (1925–1974) and Sonny Stitt (1924–1982), the celebrated 'Boss Tenors'. Their jointly billed albums 'Boss Tenors' (1961), 'Boss Tenors in Orbit!' (1962) and 'Soul Summit' (1962) staged their friendly rivalry as a tenor battle, and they reunited on 'Together Again for the Last Time' (1976). Both men were also prolific bandleaders and recording artists in their own right throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
