Biography
Greek composer, theorist and architect, born in Br膬ila, Romania, and based in Paris. Iannis Xenakis pioneered stochastic music, using probability mathematics to shape works such as 'Metastaseis' (1954) and 'Pithoprakta' (1956), and designed the UPIC computer system for composing with drawn sound. A collaborator of *Le Corbusier*, he remains a towering figure of the postwar avant-garde. His music joins mathematical rigour to a raw, archaic physical power.
