Biography
Texas-born blues-rock singer who fronted *Big Brother and the Holding Company* on 'Cheap Thrills' (1968) for #Columbia Records# before the solo triumph of 'Pearl' (1971). Her raw, overwhelming voice defined an era; she died in Los Angeles in 1970, aged 27. Raised in Port Arthur, she sang blues and folk in Texas and San Francisco coffeehouses before Big Brother recruited her in 1966, and her performances channelled Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton with an abandon no rock singer had matched.
