Biography

American jazz cellist from Cleveland, Ohio. Abdul Wadud studied at the Oberlin Conservatory, co-founded the *Black Unity Trio* and became *Julius Hemphill*'s defining collaborator on 'Dogon A.D.' (1972). A classically trained player who also performed with orchestras, he brought virtuoso pizzicato and bowing to avant-garde jazz, leaving one solo landmark, 'By Myself' (1977), and a wide and lasting sideman legacy.
