Biography
Kauan was formed in February 2005 in Chelyabinsk, Russia, by Anton Belov and Alexander Borovykh. The name is Finnish for 'for a long time', and most of the band's lyrics are in Finnish, a language Belov chose for its sound. Violinist Lyubov Mushnikova joined in September 2006, and the debut album 'Lumikuuro' appeared in 2007, blending folk, black and doom metal. Borovykh left before 'Tietäjän Laulu' in 2008, and the sound opened toward ambient and post-rock on 'Aava Tuulen Maa' in 2009 and 'Kuu..' in 2011. Belov assembled a full band in 2013 for 'Pirut', followed by 'Sorni Nai' in 2015, a concept album about the Dyatlov Pass incident, then 'Kaiho' and 'Ice Fleet'. The band relocated to Finland in 2022 and is now based in Helsinki.
