Biography
Japanese singer Maki Asakawa (1942-2010), the 'Queen of the Underground', sang jazz and blues in a low, smoke-cured voice shaped by *Billie Holiday* and *Mahalia Jackson*. From her 1970 debut 'Maki Asakawa no Sekai' through more than thirty albums and collaborations with *Ryuichi Sakamoto*, she remained a cult figurehead of Japan's counterculture until her death in Nagoya. A 2015 international compilation on #Honest Jon's# finally carried her music to Western audiences..
