Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, known for its progressive and unique sound that merges sludge, stoner, and alternative metal. The core lineup featured Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. The band gained critical acclaim for their complex instrumentation and ambitious concept albums, such as 'Leviathan', based on Herman Melville's *Moby Dick*. After signing with #Relapse Records# for their early work, they moved to major label #Reprise Records#, broadening their audience. Their evolution from a harsh, aggressive sound to incorporating more melodic, psychedelic, and accessible rock elements culminated in commercial success and a Grammy Award for their song 'Sultan's Curse'.
