Biography
Brazilian percussionist and berimbau virtuoso (1944-2016) from Recife. Naná Vasconcelos took the single-string berimbau far beyond its traditional role, combining it with voice, body percussion and a wide range of Brazilian instruments. His solo albums include 'Amazonas' and 'Saudades', and his group work includes the trio *Codona* with *Don Cherry* and *Collin Walcott* and a special-guest role with the *Pat Metheny Group*. Down Beat's critics named him best percussionist for seven straight years, from 1984 to 1990.
