Biography

Okkyung Lee, born in Daejeon, South Korea in 1975, is a cellist, composer and improviser based in New York since 2000. Classically trained, she forged a distinctive voice from free improvisation, noise, jazz and Korean traditional music, using extended techniques that push the cello to its limits. Albums such as 'Nihm' (2005) and 'Ghil' (2013) anchor a large collaborative discography, while her Yeo-Neun Quartet, heard on 'Yeo-Neun' (2020), shows her lyrical side as a composer.
