Biography
Sonny Fortune was a formidable American woodwind instrumentalist whose harmonically aggressive style defined him as a pivotal voice in post-bop and jazz fusion. Emerging from Philadelphia, he developed a powerful, searching tone on alto saxophone and flute. His career was marked by significant tenures with *McCoy Tyner* and *Elvin Jones*, and most notably, a period with *Miles Davis* during his electric explorations on albums like 'Agharta' and 'Pangaea'. While also leading his own critically noted ensembles and releasing albums such as 'Long Before Our Mothers Cried' on #Strata-East#, Fortune's legacy is anchored in his role as a versatile and intense soloist.
