Biography
The Angels of Light was an American folk and Americana band formed in New York City around 1998 by singer and guitarist Michael Gira after he disbanded *Swans*, the group he had led since 1982. Where *Swans* pursued volume and confrontation, the Angels of Light centred on Gira's acoustic songs, dressed with folk and country instrumentation and contributions from a revolving cast of New York musicians. The debut album 'New Mother' appeared in 1999 on Gira's own #Young God Records#, followed by 'How I Loved You' in 2001 and 'Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home' in 2003. For 'The Angels of Light Sing "Other People"' in 2005 and 'We Are Him' in 2007, Gira was backed chiefly by the Brooklyn band *Akron/Family*. The project wound down by the end of the decade, and Gira re-formed *Swans* in 2010.
