Biography

This Mortal *Coil* was a British studio project formed in London in 1983 by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the #4AD# label, with producer and engineer John Fryer as its only other official member. Rather than a fixed band, the project drew a rotating cast from the #4AD# roster, including members of *Cocteau Twins*, *Dead Can Dance*, *Colourbox* and *The Wolfgang Press*. Its debut album, 'It'll End in Tears' (1984), featured *Elizabeth Fraser* singing *Tim Buckley*'s 'Song to the Siren', which reached number 66 on the UK Singles Chart. The double album 'Filigree and Shadow' followed in 1986, built largely around core musicians *Simon Raymonde*, *Martin McCarrick* and *Gini Ball*. A third and final album, 'Blood', appeared in 1991, after which Watts-Russell ended the project. This Mortal *Coil* never performed live.
