Compiling extremely rare, lo-fi cassette tape recordings from the group's nascent period in the early 1990s, 'Underground Vol. 1' preserves the chilling origins of Memphis rap. DJ Paul and Juicy J crafted menacing, sample-heavy instrumentals distinguished by stuttering 808s and sinister horror film aesthetics. The dark, hypnotic atmosphere contained within directly forecasted and influenced decades of subsequent southern hip-hop and trap music.
