Album Notes & Community Reviews

Steeped heavily in controversy and violence, this notoriously influential release stands as a grim pillar of the second-wave Norwegian black metal movement. The lo-fi production highlights Varg Vikernes' agonizing, shrieking vocals over hypnotic, deeply atmospheric guitar repetition, notably featuring Emperor's Samoth on bass guitar. The infamous cover art features a photograph of the ashes of the Fantoft Stave Church, which Vikernes himself was strongly suspected of burning.
