Self-financed and rawly produced, this debut captures the Manchester legends before they fully abandoned their traditional punk roots for atmospheric dread. The provocative cover artwork, featuring a Hitler Youth member, controversially engaged with the dark fascist imagery the band flirted with early on. Despite the rudimentary sound, Ian Curtis' distinctive baritone delivery and bleak lyricism are already intensely evident.
