Album Notes & Community Reviews
A crucial transitional album for alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, 'New Soil' finds him beginning to break free from the conventions of hard bop and explore the more adventurous, harmonically freer territory that would define his work in the 1960s. Featuring a stellar lineup with Donald Byrd and Walter Davis Jr., the music retains its blues-based fire while pushing at the edges, making it a key document of a master in evolution.
