Magma [Kobaïa] cover art

Magma's ambitious double-LP debut, later reissued as 'Kobaïa', establishes the band's foundational mythology, telling the story of refugees fleeing a doomed Earth for a new planet. The album introduces their unique musical language, Zeuhl, a synthesis of jazz-rock fusion, operatic choral arrangements, and avant-garde sensibilities, all driven by Christian Vander's complex drumming. This foundational work is defined by its sprawling compositions, a prominent horn section, and lyrics sung almost entirely in Kobaïan, a language constructed by Vander to serve his distinct musical vision.
