Super Ape

Considered a landmark of the dub genre, 'Super Ape' finds producer Lee "Scratch" Perry using his Black Ark studio as an instrument to create a dense and psychedelic sonic world. Perry's production deconstructs the riddims performed by his band The Upsetters, saturating the tracks in heavy reverb, echo, and phase-shifted effects to create a murky, atmospheric swirl of sound. The album's earthy, mystical quality is built upon the foundation of Boris Gardiner's heavy basslines and the intricate horn and flute arrangements, which are warped and reconfigured into a progressive fusion of roots reggae, jazz, and soul.
