On 'The Joshua Tree', U2 pivoted from the ambient textures of their previous work toward a harder-hitting rock sound grounded in American and Irish roots music. Producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois helped craft a cinematic, atmospheric sonic landscape for the band's anthemic songwriting, which uses spiritual imagery to explore sociopolitical themes and contrasts a mythical idea of America with a more troubled reality. The album's massive commercial success, propelled by number-one singles, secured a Grammy for Album of the Year and elevated the band to global superstardom.
