Signing with Earache Records, Woods of Ypres largely abandoned their rapid black metal roots on 'W4' to fully embrace crushing, depressive gothic doom. David Gold's deep, baritone clean vocals dominate the mix, delivering bleak, highly personal lyricism over impossibly heavy, dirge-like guitar progressions.
