Biography
Arthur Blythe was an American alto saxophonist with one of the most distinctive sounds in jazz history, known for his huge, soulful, and vibrato-rich tone. A key figure in the 1970s and 80s New York avant-garde scene, he created music that was both fiercely experimental and deeply rooted in tradition. After early work with *Horace Tapscott*, he gained wider notice with *Chico Hamilton* and *Gil Evans*. His major-label debut for #Columbia#, 'Lenox Avenue Breakdown', brilliantly fused avant-garde concepts with a funky, danceable groove, showcasing his unique ability to straddle stylistic boundaries with his powerful and instantly recognizable voice.
