Biography
Jazz singer Betty Carter (1929-1998), born Lillie Mae Jones in Flint, Michigan, was jazz's most fearless vocal improviser. Schooled in *Lionel Hampton*'s band and briefly partnered with *Ray Charles*, she ran her own #Bet-Car Records# from 1971 before a Grammy-winning late career on #Verve Records#, mentoring young players to the end. Her Jazz Ahead programme at the Kennedy Center still trains young singers in her name..
