Biography

Carlos Kleiber was a German-born Austrian conductor widely regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century, despite his infrequent appearances and remarkably small official discography. Son of the eminent conductor *Erich Kleiber*, he was a legendary perfectionist, known for his electrifying and deeply insightful interpretations of a narrow range of symphonic and operatic works. His recordings, mostly for the #Deutsche Grammophon# label, are considered benchmarks, including definitive versions of Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 5' and 'Symphony No. 7', and operas like Verdi's 'La Traviata' and Strauss's 'Der Rosenkavalier'. His elusive nature and exacting standards contributed to a mystique that remains unparalleled in the world of classical music.
