Biography

Codona was a free jazz and world fusion trio active from 1978 to 1982, named from the first syllables of its members' names: sitar and tabla player Collin Walcott, trumpeter Don Cherry and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. The three multi-instrumentalists aimed to fuse African, Indian and Brazilian traditions through improvisation. For #ECM Records# they made three self-titled albums, 'Codona' (1979), 'Codona 2' (1981) and 'Codona 3' (1983), now collected as 'The Codona Trilogy', and the debut is regarded as a landmark of early world music.
