Biography
St. Elmo Sylvester Hope was a singular American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger of the bop and hard bop eras. A childhood friend of *Bud Powell* and *Thelonious Monk*, Hope developed a complex and rhythmically intricate style that set him apart. His career as a leader began in 1953 with sessions for #Blue Note#, leading to a series of recordings for labels like #Prestige# and #Riverside#. He was a valued sideman for emerging stars such as *John Coltrane*, *Clifford Brown*, and *Sonny Rollins*. Despite his immense talent, Hope's career was hampered by personal struggles and drug addiction, and he remains a comparatively underrecognized figure, admired for his uniquely angular compositions and sophisticated piano playing.
