Biography
Friends of Dean Martinez is an American instrumental rock band from Tucson, Arizona, formed in 1995 by musicians linked to *Giant Sand*, *Calexico* and *Naked Prey*. Built around Bill Elm's singing pedal steel guitar, the group mixes Americana, surf, lounge, psychedelia and dub into spacious, cinematic desert music. Its albums for #Sub Pop# and other labels, from 'The Shadow of Your Smile' to 'Lost Horizon', favour mood and melody over rock convention, and the band has also worked extensively in film scoring.
