Gustav Mahler

Biography

Gustav Mahler was an Austro-Bohemian composer and one of the most renowned conductors of his generation, acting as a pivotal bridge between late-19th century Romanticism and early-20th century Modernism. While his conducting career at institutions like the Vienna Court Opera and the New York Philharmonic was celebrated during his lifetime, his own compositions gained widespread acclaim only posthumously. His works, including nine completed symphonies and song cycles like 'Das Lied von der Erde', are known for their vast scale, emotional depth, and philosophical themes. His music, once suppressed, was rediscovered after 1945 and is now a cornerstone of the orchestral repertoire, influencing later composers like *Arnold Schoenberg* and *Dmitry Shostakovich*.
