Biography

Ian Gillan is an English singer and songwriter celebrated as the lead vocalist for the legendary hard rock band Deep Purple. Renowned for his powerful and wide-ranging voice, which introduced a more aggressive, screaming style to rock, he defined the band's most iconic era on albums like 'Deep Purple in Rock' and 'Machine Head'. Gillan also famously performed the title role on the original 1970 album recording of the rock opera 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Outside of Deep Purple, he led the jazz-rock-influenced Ian Gillan Band and the more commercially successful hard rock act Gillan. He also had a notable, year-long stint as the frontman for Black Sabbath, recording the album 'Born Again'.
