Biography
James Blood Ulmer was an American guitarist and singer who carried *Ornette Coleman*'s harmolodic ideas into free jazz, funk and the blues. After soul-jazz sideman work in the 1960s, he emerged as a leader with 'Tales of Captain Black' (1978) and led the Music Revelation Ensemble through the 1980s and 1990s. His stinging, vocal guitar style anchored the acclaimed 'Odyssey' (1983), and a late-career blues trilogy produced by *Vernon Reid* brought him a Grammy nomination.
