Biography
'Big' John Patton (1935-2002) was an American soul-jazz organist from Kansas City. After playing piano for *Lloyd Price*, he joined #Blue Note# in 1962 and led a string of classic sessions from 'Along Came John' (1963), usually with guitarist *Grant Green*. His earthy, groove-heavy Hammond B-3 playing defined soul jazz, and he enjoyed a late comeback alongside *John Zorn*. His late-1960s albums pushed soul jazz toward freer, more adventurous territory.
