Johnny Coles

Johnny Coles

A trumpeter and flugelhornist admired for his warm, lyrical tone and his thoughtful, unhurried improvisational style. Coles was a subtle and sensitive musician who made significant contributions to the ensembles of some of jazz's greatest composers. He was a key soloist in the orchestras of Gil Evans and Duke Ellington, and is particularly remembered for his poignant work with the Charles Mingus Sextet on the classic 'Town Hall Concert' album.
