Lionel Hampton was a pioneering American jazz vibraphonist, bandleader, and percussionist who rose to prominence during the Swing Era. He is credited with popularizing the vibraphone as a solo jazz instrument. After gaining fame as part of the racially integrated *Benny Goodman* Quartet in 1936, he formed his own hugely popular orchestra. His high-energy performances and showmanship made him a beloved figure, and his band became a vital training ground for future jazz legends. His signature song, 'Flying Home', recorded for #Decca# Records, became a massive hit and an anthem of the era, showcasing a pre-rhythm and blues excitement that defined his influential sound.
